With more than 150 years of history as a school, we’ve always welcomed and prepared students for brighter futures. For many years, the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management and the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences worked to accomplish the same goal—to help people get the most out of life. We united behind that mission, and as one school, on July 1, 2018.
As a school we are working to improve more lives in more ways, providing more academic opportunities for our students, supporting our community through engagement and research, and making the most of the city around us.
Moving toward a brighter future
Our vision
Advancing wellness, enhancing human experiences, and elevating quality of life for all.
Our mission
The School of Health & Human Sciences advances healthcare, kinesiology, sport, and event tourism through education, research, and community engagement. Leveraging its urban location, university reputation, deep community partnerships, and highly regarded faculty, the school prepares students to influence the future of these professions through a variety of degree offerings and scholarly activities.
Transforming lives and learning
At SHHS, we view Indianapolis as our classroom, maximizing our big-city location and world-class opportunities while maintaining a tight-knit academic community. Our students get the best of both worlds: dynamic clinical, research, and learning experiences provided by our school’s community and clinical partners coupled with a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio and an environment where individual students matter.
This is how we prepare the next generation of dreamers, doers, and leaders. Our students graduate with the clout of an Indiana University degree. Equally as valuable, our students move on from SHHS with a budding professional network and resume chock full of rich practical experiences.
Our alumni are prepared to make an immediate impact by advancing community wellness, enhancing human experiences, and elevating the quality of life in our communities.

Discovering passions and success
SHHS is home to six undergraduate degree programs, ten advanced and professional programs, and 17 certificates and minors. While varied, our academic programs focus on health and well-being, and human interaction through sports and event tourism. It's a wide-ranging field with students aspiring to become event managers, physician assistants, health educators, athletic trainers, and many other professions.
As students earn course credit in their area of academic interest, they become integrated into the Indianapolis community. Through hands-on coursework, students explore their future career options while growing their professional experience and network. Whether it’s healthcare, schools or fitness centers, big-name sporting tournaments, or blockbuster events, SHHS students are out there.
But that’s not all. SHHS students who excel in their disciplines and are interested in scientific investigation can align their studies and work with faculty to perform academic research in six different areas.
