Motor Activity Clinic

Helping children with disabilities participate in physical activity

The Motor Activity Clinic (MAC) was established in 1997 to provide quality physical activity programming for Indianapolis-area children with disabilities. MAC serves children ages 3–14 and includes instruction on fundamental motor and aquatic skills. We also offer the Advanced Motor Activity Clinic (AMAC) for young people ages 14–20.

If you are an IUPUI student, the (MAC) can provide a service learning opportunity for you to work directly with participants.

Program details

Activities

Physical activity is the hallmark of MAC. Participants receive individualized (one to two instructors per participant) physical activity programming based on their abilities. Activities vary for each individual, but participants focus primarily on building gross and fine motor development, physical fitness, swimming, and activity tolerance.

MAC serves children ages 3 to 14 and includes instruction on fundamental motor and aquatic skills. PETM also offers the Advanced Motor Activity Clinic (AMAC) for young people ages 14 to 20.

Schedule and location

MAC is offered during both the fall and spring semesters, meeting on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. for six or seven consecutive weeks. (The exact number of sessions varies depending on the semester.) MAC is held at the IU Natatorium gymnasium and instructional pool, located on the IUPUI campus at 901 W. New York Street.

Instructors

MAC participants receive instruction from IUPUI students. Some student instructors participate in MAC as the lab portion of an upper-level kinesiology course, while others are volunteers. All student instructors receive training and are supervised by clinic staff.

You can volunteer too!

Volunteer

If you're an IUPUI student interested in special education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or a related field, you can get valuable experience by working with children with disabilities in the Motor Activity Clinic and the Advanced Motor Activity Clinic. Volunteer opportunities are available during the fall and spring semesters.
