Diversity Indicator II: Education and Scholarship

Goal #1: Provide curricular, co-curricular and interdisciplinary activities that promote diversity and inclusion and that increase the ability of students, faculty, staff, and administration to understand and appreciate the diversity of the human experience.

Strategies:

  • Perform a department- and program-level needs assessment of programmatic goals and course offerings in all undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to identify DEI gaps and opportunities to enhance DEI across course offerings and content delivery. Hold student focus groups to identify gaps in curricular, co-curricular, and interdisciplinary activities which promote DEI.
    Responsible parties: Department and program chairs, faculty, curriculum committees, SHHS DEI committee
    Timeline: Spring 2022
  • Provide faculty with teaching resources to identify DEI gaps and potential areas of implicit bias in content delivery.
    Responsible parties: Course instructors, curriculum committees, department chairs
    Timeline: 2023
  • Increase student, faculty, staff, and administration awareness of and representation in campus, school, and department clubs, groups, or events which promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    Responsible parties: Marcom office, SHHS DEI committee, department and program chairs, staff directors, campus DEI offices
    Timeline: Ongoing

Metrics:

  • Culture and climate survey results
  • Number and types of programming at the school and department levels which promote DEI awareness and engagement
  • School and department engagement in campus-level DEI programming, for example Lavender Graduation
  • Completion of needs assessment; number and nature of modifications made to course offerings based on data gathered experience

Goal #2: Engage in research, scholarship, and creative activity that is mindful of the human condition.

Strategies:

  • Increase awareness of grant opportunities and campus support for research, scholarship, and creative activity that investigates issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion by faculty, staff, and students.

    Timeline: Ongoing
  • Explore methods to enhance inclusivity through collaboration across disciplines and schools for tangible and productive research, scholarship, and creative activity.
    Responsible parties: Associate dean for research, research faculty, development office, SHHS grants staff, campus research support/vice chancellor for research, CTSI, OVCR
    Timeline: Fall 2021
  • Provide education and training in DEI issues related to research, scholarship, and creative activity for faculty, staff, and students who participate.
