Physical Education Teacher Education

Making futures brighter through physical education

Physical education teachers transform lives. For some children, they’re the first adults to promote healthy, active lifestyles.

Our program for preparing physical education teachers is the oldest in the nation, meets all standards of the Indiana Department of Education, and is founded on the guidelines of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

You’ll earn an all-grade Indiana teacher’s license for physical education, and you’ll have many options for student teaching.

Be part of a legacy

Our physical education program dates back to the founding of the Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union in 1866. Meaning you'll be part of not only the most historic program at IUPUI, but the oldest physical education program in the nation.

Teach early, teach often

You'll have many opportunities to teach pre-K through grade 12 students before you graduate. During your final semester, you get to be the teacher as you participate in student teaching and apply your years of classroom knowledge and hands-on experiences.

Licensed to shape lives

Your degree prepares you to promote youth physical activity and wellness and enables you to determine what age group you impact. As a graduate, you'll be dually licensed in physical and health education and be able to teach at all grade levels in Indiana.

Discover a meaningful career

When you start your career in the field, you'll make a difference by shaping youth's lives through physical and health education.

In addition to becoming teachers, our graduates also serve as team coaches and after-school program directors. Many are promoted to principal and other administrative school positions. You might also direct a youth camp or youth sports organization.
